Understanding Exfoliation
Purpose and Benefits
Exfoliating helps to remove dead skin cells, making room for fresh, youthful skin. When done correctly, exfoliation can reveal a smoother, brighter complexion, improve texture, and even prevent clogged pores. It’s an essential step for maintaining healthy skin—but it’s all about balance.
Types: Physical vs. Chemical
Exfoliation comes in two main forms: physical and chemical. Physical exfoliants, like scrubs or brushes, manually slough off dead skin cells. While they can be effective, they can also be harsh on sensitive skin if used too frequently. On the other hand, chemical exfoliants use acids—like AHA (alpha-hydroxy acid) and BHA (beta-hydroxy acid)—to break down the bonds between dead skin cells, allowing them to be removed more gently. Chemical exfoliants can be more effective and less abrasive than their physical counterparts.
